The interior of the English cottages was typically small, with warren-like floor plans. These diminutive rooms lent themselves to a significant amount of comfort, where comfort and functionality were more important than aesthetics. Cast-off furniture and repurposed items were a big part of the decor in these humble homes. Based on these rustic beginnings an interior design style emerged, now known as the English cottage.

Padded furniture, in the form of wing chairs and armchairs, is essential for the English cottage design. The attenuation is deep and overstuffed, with comfort going ahead style. No two pieces are of the same style. The upholstered furniture shares common features, though. None are too big pieces, especially sofa, which can be more sofa or sofa than sofa. Benches and hardback chairs are stored in the corners to serve as extra seating.

A characteristic feature of the English cottage design is the color palette. The colors are those found in English gardens, a mixture of dark green and brown, pale pink and rose red. Yellow and orange are accent colors in textiles and area rugs. Fabric patterns and prints range from large flowers to stripes and chintzes. Fringe and floss edges in contrasting colors are used as accents on furniture and large spaces in fabric or worn out shawls are thrown on the countertops and backs on the chairs. The result is an eclectic mix of color and texture.
